Instead, it has become a critical issue that demands attention at the highest levels of leadership. The NCSC report emphatically urges decision-makers to “open your eyes to the imminent risk to your economic security.” It makes clear that cyber incidents have the potential to disrupt essential operations, inflict lasting reputational damage and result in significant financial and legal repercussions.

In an environment where threats are ever-present and the risk of future threatsis growing rapidly, true organisational resilience depends on strategic foresight, thorough preparation and the capacity to recover effectively from attacks.

The pressing question then, is how organisations can translate these warnings and insights into practical action. A compelling solution lies in the adoption of robust Enterprise Architecture practices. Specifically the use of ArchiMate enables organisations to systematically document their enterprise landscape and the relationships between systems, providing the clarity needed to strengthen resilience.

Enterprise Architecture: A Blueprint for Cyber Resilience

The NCSC report makes it clear: cyber security is now critical to business longevity and success. It is not just about technology anymore. It is about understanding how your organisation operates, how systems interact and where vulnerabilities lie. The report calls for all business leaders to take responsibility for their organisation’s cyber resilience, moving beyond technical silos to a holistic, strategic approach.

Enterprise Architecture provides the blueprint for this approach. It helps organisations map out their business processes, applications, data and technology infrastructure. By visualising these elements and their interconnections, leaders can take meaningful steps towards resilience.

ArchiMate: Documenting the Enterprise

ArchiMate is an open and widely adopted modelling language specifically designed for enterprise architecture. It allows organisations to create clear and consistent diagrams that illustrate how business processes, application landscapes, and technology layers align and interact with one another.

Using ArchiMate, organisations can achieve several key objectives:

Model business processes and their supporting systems – Providing a structured view of how core operations are underpinned by technology.

Map data flows and integrations between applications – Offering clarity on how information moves throughout the organisation and where potential integration points or vulnerabilities may exist.

Visualise technology infrastructure and network boundaries – Enabling a comprehensive understanding of the technology landscape and its security perimeters.

Document relationships and dependencies between systems – Ensuring that all critical interconnections and dependencies are recorded, which is essential for risk assessment and resilience planning.

This approach is particularly important in the context of cyber resilience. The NCSC report underscores that attackers often exploit the complexity and interconnectedness of systems. Without a clear understanding of how systems depend on and relate to each other, organisations risk overlooking critical vulnerabilities or being unable to recover swiftly from security incidents.

The Importance of Documenting Relationships

The NCSC Annual Review emphasises that resilience extends beyond mere prevention; it encompasses an organisation’s capacity to continue operating and to recover effectively after a disruptive incident. One crucial aspect of building such resilience is the thorough documentation of relationships between systems. This practice serves several essential purposes:

Risk Assessment – A clear understanding of how systems depend on one another is fundamental for identifying single points of failure as well as recognising where cascading impacts may arise. By mapping out these dependencies, organisations can better anticipate and manage risks that might jeopardise operational continuity.

Incident Response – In the event of a cyberattack or other disruptive incident, having documented knowledge of system interconnections allows for quicker isolation and containment of threats. This, in turn, enables a more efficient recovery process, minimising downtime and damage.

Compliance and Governance – With regulatory bodies increasingly demanding proof of robust cyber risk management, having comprehensive documentation of system architecture provides the necessary assurance. It demonstrates a proactive approach to governance and supports compliance with industry standards.

Continuous Improvement – The technology landscape and threat environment are constantly evolving. Maintaining up-to-date architecture documentation ensures that organisations remain agile, capable of adapting to new risks, and able to reinforce their defences as needed.

Identification of Organisational and Technical Debt – Documenting relationships also helps in pinpointing areas of organisational and technical debt. This awareness is vital for planning improvements and ensuring that legacy issues do not compromise cyber resilience.

Practical Steps for Enhancing Cyber Resilience

The following practical steps outline how to leverage enterprise architecture tools and the ArchiMate framework to strengthen your organisation’s defences:

Utilise Enterprise Architects and Tooling – A good Enterprise Architect understands how to get the best out of modelling a business and systems. Use Enterprise Architecture tools such as ArchiMate to streamline the process of mapping and documenting your organisation’s systems and their interconnections.

Start with a Baseline – Begin by creating a high-level overview of your organisation’s business processes, applications, and underlying technology. This baseline serves as the foundation for understanding how different elements interact and where vulnerabilities may exist.

Identify Relationships – Carefully document all integrations, data flows, and dependencies within your system architecture. Paying particular attention to legacy systems and third-party connections, as these often present unique risks and challenges.

Assess and Prioritise – Use your architectural model to pinpoint critical assets. This enables you to prioritise resilience measures, ensuring that essential systems receive appropriate attention and protection.

Communicate – Share your documented architecture with key stakeholders, including board members, IT teams, and external partners. Clear communication ensures all parties are aware of the risks involved and the responsibilities required to mitigate them.

Review Regularly – Continuously update your system documentation to reflect changes in technology, emerging threats, and lessons learned from past incidents. Regular reviews ensure that your organisation remains prepared to adapt to an evolving threat landscape.

Keep a copy offline – Keep a copy of your models so that you can access them when you cant access you systems.

Enterprise Architecture can play a pivotal role in fostering innovation by providing a structured approach to aligning technology with business goals. Through Enterprise Architecture, an organisation can ensure that their technological initiatives are not only advancing but also tailored to support and enhance business objectives, driving innovative outcomes.

Although this concept isn’t new and is well documented academically and in many blogs and internet articles and frameworks, the demand for innovation is now considerably higher because of rapid technical and commercial improvements.

Aligning Business and IT Strategies

One of the primary functions of Enterprise Architecture is to align business and IT strategies. By creating a roadmap that outlines how technology initiatives support business objectives, an organisation can ensure that its innovation efforts are focused and effective. This alignment helps in identifying opportunities for innovation that directly contribute to business goals and outcomes.

This involves a continual process of evaluating and adjusting the IT strategy to accommodate shifting business priorities, industry trends, and market conditions. Enterprise Architects need to work closely with stakeholders and business leaders to understand the strategic vision and translate it into actionable plans. This synergy allows organisations to leverage technological advancements to gain a competitive advantage and enhance operational efficiency. To enable this it is important that Enterprise Architects are informed and staying ahead of the curve.

Establishing a robust governance framework to monitor, measure, and review the success of outcomes against strategic initiatives enables informed decision-making. This helps foster a culture of continuous improvement and innovation.

Facilitating Agile Transformation

Enterprise Architecture provides a foundation for agile transformation by allowing flexibility and adaptability within processes and systems. Implementing agile methodologies furnishes an organisation with a more effective response to market fluctuations and customer demands.

Enterprise Architecture aids in pinpointing areas suitable for agility enhancements and ensures that the requisite infrastructure is identified to support these initiatives. This can involve creating modular and scalable systems that can be easily reconfigured or expanded as business needs change, providing continuous value delivery to customers and meet the business outcomes.

Supporting the cultural shift required for agile transformation is crucial. The organisation must promote a mindset of collaboration, experimentation, and learning, while allowing for a ‘fail fast, learn, and adapt’ attitude.

Enabling Digital Transformation

Digital transformation lies at the core of innovation in most modern organisations and today AI is helping drive that journey. Enterprise Architecture plays a crucial role in enabling digital transformation by providing a blueprint for integrating new technologies, such as adopting AI to assist and improve the business. Enterprise Architecture offers strategic direction, technological framework, and governance, helping to accelerate innovation while ensuring the organisation remains agile, resilient, and capable of meeting business and customer needs and outcomes.

Optimising Resource Utilisation

Effective resource utilisation can help to drive innovation. Enterprise Architecture helps organisations optimise their resources by providing a clear view of their IT assets and capabilities. This visibility allows organisations to identify redundancies, streamline processes, and allocate resources more efficiently, thereby freeing up capacity for innovative projects. By making savings in one area, the savings could be reinvested into innovative projects helping to create additional savings and growth.

Enhancing Collaboration and Communication

Innovation often requires collaboration across different departments and teams throughout an organisation. Enterprise Architecture facilitates this collaboration by providing a common language and framework for communication through a standard agreed taxonomy. By breaking down silos and promoting a holistic view of the organisation, Enterprise Architecture enables teams to work together more effectively on innovative initiatives.

Supporting Risk Management

Innovation involves taking risk and these risks should and need to be managed effectively. Enterprise Architecture supports risk management by providing a structured approach to identifying, assessing, and mitigating risks associated with new initiatives. This ensures that innovation efforts are not only creative but also sustainable and aligned with the organisation’s risk appetite.

Driving Continuous Improvement

Enterprise Architecture is not a one-time effort but a continuous process of improvement. Adaptability isn’t just a skill—it’s a survival instinct for technologists. From rapidly shifting industry trends to the emergence of innovative technologies, the ability to pivot, learn, and integrate new knowledge is what sets successful technologists apart.

Adaptability enables us to turn challenges into opportunities, fosters innovation, and drives continuous personal and professional growth.

Why Adaptability Matters

Adaptability as a technologist is crucial for staying flexible and open to new ways of thinking, technologies and methodologies. The ability to adapt is not just a valuable skill, but a necessity in today’s world. Advancements and new technologies are appearing everyday, from energising artificial intelligence to quantum computing. Technologists must be ready to learn, pivot to and embrace these changes.

This flexibility allows technologists to continuously update their knowledge and skills, ensuring they are relevant and competitive. By staying at the forefront of technological advancements, a technologist can help to drive innovation and improve efficiency within their organisation and customers.

An adaptable mindset also enhances problem solving abilities, enabling technologists to explore various solutions and approaches to overcome challenges.

Rapid Technological Advancements

To stay relevant and competitive, it is essential to keep abreast of technological advancements and changes, some of which happen at a fast pace. This involves not just learning about new technologies, but also understanding their implications and applications.

A good method for keeping up is to have in place a PKMS (Personal Knowledge Management System).

Problem Solving

Adaptability can greatly enhance problem solving skills. When faced with challenges, an adaptable mindset allows technologists to explore various solutions and approaches, which may lead to more effective outcomes.

An adaptable technologist is not confined to a single way of thinking or a rigid set of tools. Instead, they are open to experimenting with different techniques and technologies to find the best possible solution. This might involve integrating new programming languages, leveraging emerging frameworks, or applying innovative development methodologies.

Using standard problem solving techniques can help, some of which are listed below:

  • Brainstorming: In a group setting, generating various ideas and solutions while encouraging creativity and open-mindedness.
  • Root Cause Analysis: Finding the main cause of a problem using techniques like the 5 Whys and Fishbone Diagrams.
  • SWOT Analysis: Assessing the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats associated with a problem or decision.
  • Mind Mapping: Visualise ideas and their interconnections to enhance understanding of the problem and identify potential solutions.
  • Trial and Error: Experiment with various solutions to determine the most effective approach, learning from any mistakes.
  • Decision Matrix: Compare different options using specific criteria to identify the optimal solution.
  • Pareto Analysis: Apply the 80/20 rule to prioritise the most significant factors that will have the greatest impact on resolving the issue.
  • Cost-Benefit Analysis: Evaluate the costs and benefits of different solutions to select the most efficient one.
  • Six Thinking Hats: Analyse the problem from six distinct perspectives (logical, emotional, creative,) to obtain a comprehensive view.
  • PDCA Cycle (Plan-Do-Check-Act): Follow a continuous improvement process involving planning a solution, implementing it, checking the outcomes, and acting on the insights gained.
  • Flowcharting: Create a visual representation of the process steps to identify potential problem areas.
  • Force Field Analysis: Identify forces that support or hinder a change or solution and develop strategies to strengthen supporting forces while mitigating hindering ones.

Innovation

Being open to new ideas and methodologies encourages innovation. By accepting change, you can create solutions that explore new possibilities.

When technologists embrace innovation, they are more likely to experiment with emerging technologies and unconventional approaches. This can lead to breakthroughs that significantly enhance productivity, efficiency, and creativity within organisations and customers. For example, exploring the potential of artificial intelligence and machine learning can result in more accurate predictive models and data analysis tools that provide deeper insights into business operations.

Being innovative also means continuously questioning the status quo and seeking ways to improve existing processes. This proactive mindset can lead to the development of new products and services that meet evolving market demands and provides a competitive edge. Additionally, fostering a culture of innovation can inspire colleagues to think creatively and collaboratively, leading to a more dynamic and forward-thinking work environment.

Innovation is not limited to technological advancements alone. It can also involve reimagining organisational structures, workflows, and management practices to tackle modern challenges.

It allows you to develop a deeper understanding of your field and refine your skills, ensuring that you remain a valuable asset to your team and organisation. By consistently updating your knowledge, you can also identify and capitalise on emerging opportunities.

Continuous learning fosters a mindset of curiosity and creativity, inspiring you to explore new areas and experiment with innovative ideas and building your growth mindset.

Experimentation

Allocate time for side projects to explore and apply new tools and methodologies without deadline pressure. Embrace a mindset of innovation and creativity, allowing yourself to experiment with different approaches and solutions.

Don’t be afraid to fail and learn from it. Each experiment, whether successful or not, provides valuable insights and fosters a culture of continuous improvement. By experimenting, you can uncover new ways of solving problems, optimise existing processes, and discover untapped potential within your work.

Networking

Networking is engaging with other professionals in your field by joining relevant tech communities, attending conferences, and participating in forums to exchange knowledge and learn from others’ experiences.

Networking provides opportunities to stay informed about industry trends, gain insights from seasoned professionals, and discover new career opportunities. By building a strong professional network, you can also find mentors who can offer guidance and support as you navigate your career.

Networking can lead to collaborative projects, where you can apply your skills and learn new ones in a team environment. Engaging with a diverse group of professionals can expose you to different perspectives and approaches, further enhancing your adaptability and problem-solving abilities.

Embrace Change

Develop a positive attitude towards change instead of resisting new technologies by viewing them as opportunities to grow and improve your skills. 2025 PKMS Updates: Boost Productivity and Knowledge Retention

As 2025 begins, I am again updating my PKMS (Personal Knowledge Management System) to keep up with the latest developments in knowledge management and my own priorities.

One of the key habits that I have been focusing on is micro learning by taking opportunities where I may have spent time scrolling a device, turning the time to be more productive through spending the time on learning and AI is playing a part in this.

I am publishing these updates so you can use this as a pattern to help create your own PKMS and stay informed and ahead of the curve.

What is a PKMS?

A PKMS, or Personal Knowledge Management System, is a structured framework designed to help someone manage and organise their personal and professional knowledge. In today’s world there is a lot of information produced daily. It also serves as a repository for capturing, storing, retrieving information and making it easier to access relevant data when needed.

The primary objective of a PKMS is to enhance a person’s ability to learn, retain, and apply knowledge efficiently.

A well formed PKMS can help provide several benefits:

  • Continuous Learning: With a growth mindset, a PKMS facilitates a structured approach to acquiring, organising, and reviewing knowledge.
  • Increased Productivity: Access to relevant, organised information as you need it, keeping you ahead of the curve.
  • Knowledge Retention: The ability to store and retrieve information as required in an organised repository.
  • Adaptability: Technology, information, and data evolve daily, and it is important to stay informed.

I still believe strongly in separating my personal social and business social, although there is the occasional need for the two to cross. These are the tools that I use. There are lots of other tools available that you could use to build a PKMS yourself. Maintaining a distinction between personal social and business social is important, though there are instances where they may overlap. Here are some tools used for this purpose. Numerous other tools are also available for building a Personal Knowledge Management System (PKMS).

Professional Life

Research

Research is an integral part of my Personal Knowledge Management System (PKMS). It involves gathering information that supports learning and integration into my work. Continuous learning is my key goal of my PKMS to stay ahead as a Technologist. Below is a high-level list of the types of content that I utilise for research and learning.

  • AI
  • Streaming Services
  • RSS Feeds
  • Podcasts
  • TED Talks
  • Web Searches
  • Blog Posts
  • Learning
  • Micro Learning
  • Reading

Some of these are fairly self explanatory as sources. I may expand on some of the sources I use in future posts.

AI (Artificial Intelligence)

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is growing in use and works well in my PKMS to enhance the way information is gathered, organised, and retrieved.

AI is a good tool to ask as an assistant when researching, asking questions and can provide a reasonable summary of long documents and papers.

RSS

Some sites have an RSS feed which allows me to pull updates from sites directly into Feedly.

Podcasts

Podcasts cover both audio and video casts that I watch/stream online or download to my phone/media player to listen to when I am on journeys in the car or other transportation methods or out walking the dog. Daily walks with the dog provide a good time to listen to these.

Feedly

Feedly provides an aggregation tool that collects stories from various blogs and websites that I find useful for research and information . This generates a list of stories that can be quickly scanned on a single screen without having to visit multiple sites. Clicking on a story displays a snippet from the source site and provides a link to read the full article, if necessary. Using a series of keystrokes, it is possible to read the headlines, then move through the articles efficiently, stopping and opening them as needed.

Sources can be categorized to allow an all-view or just what’s new in a category.

Thinking Time

Thinking Time covers the time that I spend absorbing the PKMS information coming in from the different sources and then processing and applying it in different ways. It is also good to spend time reflecting on what I have learned and think of different and new ways to use the information and learnings.

Note Taking

I use two tools now for note-taking: OneNote and Obsidian. I favour Obsidian as it uses Markdown, which I use a lot for documentation, and its ability to structure data in a logical way and allows you to query data in an interactive graph.

Being Social

I use several social channels to publish my thoughts as a Technologist. The main channel I use is this blog site.

Personal Life

Personal Journal

My personal journals have always been Moleskine plain pocket books, be more recently I have made a switch to using Rhodia range of pocket books with dots. My main reason was on price as Moleskine has risen a fair bit for their products. I have used a couple of Rhodia pocket books since my switch and I actually find the paper a lot better and its slightly thicker which can support more inks without a bleed through to the pages below.

I still favour the Pilot ball ink pens as before in 0.5 or 0.7 size.

No batteries or charging needed for this type of personal journal.

Social Media

To keep my work life separate from my personal life, I use social platforms like Instagram and Facebook for friends and family, ensuring that two-factor authentication and appropriate security settings are in place.

Even with these precautions, it’s essential to remember that anything posted online could potentially become public in the future.

“Staying ahead of the curve” is an important skill set for any technologist. Knowing what is going on both internally to your company and externally, builds your knowledge capability from following strategy to identifying trends and innovation provides you with an edge to being technologist.

Information and technology is evolving at a rapid rate, so how can you stay ahead of the curve? This is something that needs a multifaceted approach dedication is a hard task to know everything so you have to build your own information strategy and filter what is important and what is just noise or not relevant.

Below are some essential strategies to help you to stay ahead of the curve.

Embrace a Growth Mindset

Learning increases your understand and get to grips with technology and business skills. These should be balanced with soft skills to help make you a more rounded technologist. Coined by psychologist Carol S. Dweck, a Growth Mindset is the belief that one’s abilities and intelligence can be developed through dedication, hard work, and resilience. This mindset is in stark contrast to a fixed mindset, which assumes that intelligence and talent are innate and unchangeable.

Networking encompasses the art of building meaningful relationships, fostering connections, and creating a collaborative community. Just as computer networks enable the flow of information, networking with people propels the exchange of ideas, opportunities, and support.

  • Building a Professional Network: A strong professional network can open doors to opportunities, provide valuable insights, and support your career journey. Focus on Quality Connections to build out your network and prioritise meaningful relationships over a large number of contacts. Its not about numbers but how you connect with your network.
  • Joining Tech Communities and Forums: Participate and join industry-specific organisations, alumni groups, and online communities which will help grow your knowledge, skills and connections. Joining professional organisations such as the BCS can provide access to a wide areas of knowledge and professionals.
  • Attending Meetups and Networking Events: There are lots of meetups and events that can come from joining communities. Events both physical and virtual are a good platform to meeting others with similar technological mindsets. This is also a method to build your professional network.
  • Knowledge Exchange: Networking is a two-way street where professionals share insights, experiences, and knowledge. Engaging with peers, both online and offline, allows technologists to tap into a vast pool of expertise. Whether it’s troubleshooting code, discussing the latest frameworks, or sharing project experiences, networking facilitates meaningful knowledge exchange.
  • Early Access to Information: Being part of a network often means gaining early access to information. Whether it’s insider tips on upcoming technologies, insights into industry shifts, or exclusive event invitations, networking provides a conduit for staying ahead of the curve. Platforms like LinkedIn and Twitter can be powerful channels for real-time updates.
  • Mentorship Opportunities: Establishing connections with experienced professionals opens the door to mentorship opportunities. A mentor can provide guidance, share industry wisdom, and help navigate the complexities of career growth. Mentorship relationships foster continuous learning and personal development.

Keeping updated on the latest trends and developments in both the technology and business sectors is a key activity for any technologist. This includes understanding how emerging technologies may impact various industries and be aware of the business challenges and opportunities associated with these changes.

  • Newsfeed: Create a personalised newsfeed using diversified sources to provide up to date news and trends on the topics that are of interest to your area of technology. Consider expanding to other areas to learn new things. Looking at different industries and technology areas can often bring fresh and new perspectives on things, whilst also providing possible innovation ideas.
  • Newsletters: Subscribe to newsletters from reputable tech publications. They often curate relevant articles and deliver them directly to your inbox.
  • Podcasts: Listening to a diverse set of podcasts can provide insights and opinions into business, technology and news.
  • Blogs: Follow technology blogs that cover industry trends, product launches, and expert insights. Regularly reading blog posts can keep you informed.

Understanding the Business Side of Technology

As a technologist, it’s imperative to move beyond the confines of it, coding and technical expertise to comprehend the broader business implications work and projects. Understanding the business side of technology is a transformative skill set that not only enhances individual career prospects but also positions the technologist as a professional integral to organisational success.

  • Stay Informed About Industry Trends: Keep yourself updated on the latest trends and developments in both the technology and business sectors. Understand how emerging technologies may impact various industries and be aware of the business challenges and opportunities associated with these changes.
  • Read Business Literature: Reading business-oriented literature helps to expand your thinking and mindset beyond a technical view. Sources such as industry reports, business magazines, and books can provide insights into the strategic aspects of technology in business.
